What are Doshas?
What’s Your Dosha?
In Ayurveda, every individual is born with a unique, inherent blend of three primary energies, known as doshas. These energies—vata, pitta, and kapha—play a crucial role in regulating both the physical and emotional aspects of our health, shaping our overall mind-body constitution. While one dosha tends to dominate, everyone possesses a mix of all three to varying degrees.
Some individuals have a combination of two dominant doshas, while others may be Tridoshic and have all three in equal balance.
When the doshas are in harmony we feel vital, clear, and grounded, and experience optimal health; however, when out of balance, we might notice mood shifts, digestive issues, skin disease and, eventually, illness. Understanding your dosha is a beautiful step toward living in sync with your natural rhythms—body, mind, and spirit.
Vata
Vata is the energy of movement—light, dry, and changeable. When Vata is in balance, you feel creative, enthusiastic, and inspired. Out of balance, you might feel anxious, scattered, or struggle with sleep or dryness. Vata is soothed by warmth, grounding routines, and nourishing foods. To pacify Vata, favour sweet, sour, and salty tastes—think sour dough with butter and jam, soups, root vegetables, warm stews, and healthy oils.
Pitta
Pitta is the energy of transformation—hot, sharp, and intense. When balanced, Pitta brings focus, confidence, and strong digestion. Out of balance, it can show up as irritability, inflammation, or burnout. To calm Pitta, seek cooling, calming experiences and avoid overheating (in food or life). Balance Pitta with sweet, bitter, and astringent tastes—like cooling herbs, leafy greens, and hydrating fruits.
Kapha
Kapha is the energy of stability—heavy, slow, and steady. When in balance, Kapha feels loving, calm, and grounded. When excess builds, it can lead to sluggishness, attachment, or low mood. Kapha thrives with movement, variety, and lightness. Favour pungent, bitter, and astringent tastes—spices, greens, and warm, light meals that get things moving.
